Getting started with online counseling

The decision to pursue counseling can be hard and often comes during trials, challenges, and when you feel alone. Knowing that, we want to make the process as simple as possible. We take your mental health seriously, and we want to make getting support easy. We believe so much in the value of counseling that we offer a free consultation. If, after the consultation, it does not feel like it is for you, you have no obligation to continue.

In addition to simple, we want to make counseling as accessible as possible. To do this, we prioritize our online counseling services. This gives you the freedom to invest in yourself from the comfort of your own home, car, office, or anywhere else you find yourself (with internet). Regardless of your schedule or responsibilities, we want to make it possible for you to receive counseling.

All of our online counseling services are provided utilizing a HIPAA compliant platform. This platform also gives you access to a secure messaging system. You can use this system to reach out to your counselor at any time. We always do our best to respond to those messages within 24 hours during the week and slightly longer on weekends.

  • If you are unsure about online counseling, we still encourage you to give it a try. The first session is free, and if you decide it is not for you, we would be happy to connect you with in-person service.

The “SCHEDULE” button gives you easy access to find and schedule a session. If you don’t see a time available on the schedule that works for you, please let us know, and we will do our best to accommodate your schedule.

Individual counseling

Individual counseling is all about finding a safe space to be yourself without judgment. While people often feel pressure do counseling the “right” way, it is good to remember that there is no “right” way. The only right thing you can do is to be yourself.

At Olive, we use a blend of Narrative Theory and Person-Centered Theory to guide counseling sessions. Together these theories focus on providing a hope-based understanding of the individual. This approach emphasizes the individual’s strength and potential as they explore new ways to engage with their narrative. Overall, our goal is to empower individuals as they overcome the issues they face.

What can you expect in the first session?

Knowing what to expect in the first session can make choosing counseling a little easier. Even knowing what to expect though, the first session can still feel a little uncomfortable. In light of that, we do our best to make the experience as comfortable as possible. One of the best ways to do that is to set expectations well. The first time we connect, whether online or in-person, the main goal is to get to know each other. Whatever you would

Often, the first session involves a lot of questions and feels a little like an interview. The questions range from “what brings you here?” to questions about your life, family, and daily routines. As we talk, you are always welcome to share as much or as little as you are comfortable with. Our goal is to get to know you better to understand how we can more effectively support you with every question.

Couples Counseling

Couples counseling is all about finding a safe, neutral space for communication and growth. That can mean learning new ways of communicating or just needing a safe environment to have those conversations. In general, couples counseling aims to provide a space for couples to grow and overcome the challenges they face.

At Olive, we primarily use Emotionally-Focused Therapy (EFT) in our work with couples. The focus is on understanding how our emotions, interactions, and attachments come together to form healthy and unhealthy patterns in our relationship. EFT aims to encourage the growth of new healthy patterns and move away from unhealthy patterns.

What can you expect in the first session?

During the first session of couples counseling, there are a few goals. The first goal is to establish together a few ground rules for the conversations in future sessions. These ground rules create a safe space for each partner to be open in the conversation. The second goal is for the couple and the counselor to get to know each other better. Finally, the counselor will begin to get an idea of how the partners interact with each other.

Other services

  • We are driven by the question, “why not try it?” This is why Michael White (one of the founders of Narrative Theory) asked of himself when a different or creative approach came to mind. At the heart of that question is the idea that every individual is unique in the same way every situation is also unique. If you have a unique challenge that you think would benefit from our support, we are open to exploring creative ways to work with that challenge.
  • If there is a way that you think we could be beneficial in supporting you or what you do, let us know! We would absolutely love to have that conversation and move forward with you.
